The recent collapse or near-collapse of important financial market participants has revealed a worrisome fragility of the financial system. Several culprits have been named for this crisis: pro-cyclicality and correlated behavior due to regulatory rules, weaknesses in the rating procedures, inappropriate accounting rules, either lack of or excessive amount of transparency, weaknesses of the Basel II mark-to-model rules, inappropriate incentives of bank management, and maybe also simply a lack of competence of some market participants. The objective of this special issue is to bring together ideas, theories, and empirical evidence with the aim of developing a view of the way financial market (and bank) regulation needs to be reformed as a consequence of this crisis.
