With the growth of colonial goods trading during the 19th century the Hamburg Exchange relocated from its original offices at Trostbrücke, the heart of what was then Hamburg's first small port, to a new building at Adolphsplatz 1 in 1841, where it is still located today. Twenty-five years later, the cornerstone for the Rathaus was laid to the rear of the Hamburg Exchange and now constitutes one of the city's most beautiful and certainly most traditional structures. With both buildings standing back to back, the post-classical Hamburg Exchange and the Rathaus have shared immediate vicinity for more than a century.
